For those of you who don't know, there is a real Hitty to which all Hittys aspire. She is living at the Stockbridge Public Library in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She was rescued from an antique store by Rachel Field and Dorothy Lathrop and subsequently inspired them to write and illustrate Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, which they published in 1929. They judged her to be over a hundred years old at that time.
Today, January 22nd, is the day on which we celebrate her birthday and as such, it is a day of great celebration in the Hitty world.
Weathertop has prepared an abundant feast for the occassion...
...and everyone is in attendance, dressed in their Sunday best.
Hitty Too is about to pour herself a cup of tea.
How about some shortcake to go with your tea, Hitty Too.
As you can see we baked several different kinds of cake. Alice is patiently waiting for a piece...
She isn't the only one.
Mrs. Witherwax and Sadie are having a conversation on the couch...
...while Hitty Dauphine admires all of the lovely decorations.
Even Lilly, the Easter Bunny, is in attendance.
Although I think she would prefer carrot cake to chocolate fudge.
It's time to light the candles and sing "Happy Birthday!"
Hitty Dauphine was chosen to blow out the candles.
But some people have eyes for nothing but cake.
I think Mrs. Witherwax has the right idea. Why choose just one piece when you can take the whole plate.
It is a party after all, and she sure looks happy!
Happy Birthday Hitty!
