It was cold and sleety today, but my car registration had expired, so I went for a drive to the DMV to renew it.
It probably sounds counter-intuitive to most people to drive further out into the country to go to the DMV...
...but such was my path on this moody, atmospheric day, and it lead me past some pretty, if lonely, views.
The road I traveled was quite deserted and out here in the hill country, you never know into what kind of people you might run. I am always a little wary of wandering around on my own taking pictures. I wouldn't want to offend anyone or look too closely at someone who is trying to be invisable.
The barn above was obviously in good working condition, but out here you find some pretty run down looking structures that appear derelict, but still function as some sort of shelter.
The barn below was one such structure. As you can see, the roof is compromised and snow has fallen inside of the barn. Not only that but you can see through the barn out to the field on the other side.
This particular barn was adjacent to a run down looking house that though appearing to be in better condition than the barn, had glassless gaping windows nonetheless. Here is where the tricky part comes in...as I was taking the photograph of the barn, someone pulled out of this property. I am glad they didn't catch me taking a picture of the house, as interesting as it was. Had I seen the house before the people pulled out, I would have undoubtly stopped to take as many pictures as my cold hands could bear because glassless window, to me, mean abandonment.
One site that fascinates me out here in the countryside is the skeletal remains of cornstalks in the field, spread out in rows like a braille message left for Jack's giant.
I think the silouettes of milk pods on the snow are quite lovely as well.
I liked this copse of trees so dark against the white snow.
Because the temperature is finally creeping higher, the rivers and creeks are swollen and flowing swiftly. But still edged with heavy snow, they are quite picturesque.
I know you are probably pretty tired of looking at snow and ice and the lack of sunlight...believe me, I am as well...but I've got to take photos of the things I see, and although the world is painted in very subtle colors right now, I find that it is still beautiful nonetheless. I just have to adjust my thinking and learn how to look at it.
