Today I was out pulling up the old lettuces which have gotten bitter and nasty and I thought that although my family has rejected them, perhaps the bunnies would like them. So I was walking to the back of our yard to leave them for the bunnies when I spotted a brown lump in the grass. At first I thought it was dog poop and was curious as to how the dog got that far out into the yard to do his business, so I stooped down to look at it closer thinking it was the skat of another animal and wondering what animal that might be. Much to my surprise, it was a tiny bunny the size of a large man's fist.
He let me get quite close, as you will see from my photos...
He seemed to be uninjured, but he also did not seem to be at all interested in the greens I had to offer.
When I moved the grasses aside for a better look, he made a squeak and jumped to a new spot.
Punch, of course wanted to keep him, but I told him that bunnies are wild creatures and need to stay outdoors, and that this one might be sick.
I sure hope he is not ill, but I am worried about the little guy and think that if he is still out there when Mr. MacGyver returns from work that we will have to move him at the very least. I don't want to put my family or the dog in jeopardy.
Update: I went back to check on the bunny and he had hopped away. One can only presume we scared the living daylights out of him and he was unable to move out of fear. I am so relieved that he is okay.
