Saying Good-bye...

Though they were sad to lose a beloved sister, Hitty Dauphine and Hitty Too threw themselves into the project of creating a care package to ease Evalina on her way. They tried to consider every angle and anticipate every need.

They gathered a nice collection of things to send along with her to remind her of home: a quilt and pillow to keep her warm, a stuffed rabbit to snuggle, pajamas, an extra dress, books, pens, pencils, pencil holder, a pair of scissors, books, notebooks, a tea set and most importantly, at least to Hitty Dauphine's mind, a picture of herself so that Evalina would remember her loving sister.

They had gathered everything in the kitchen and were trying to get it organized when Evalina herself walked into the room.

"Hi guys, I was just looking for...Hey! What are you two up to, are we gathering things for another Haiti auction?" Asked Evalina.

"No silly, we are gathering things for you to take with you when you go away to school." Replied Hitty Dauphine.

"I found you this cozy quilt and pillow for your bed." Hitty Too offered.

"And I put together a few school supplies to get you started. I even got you your very own tea set. I figured you might like to have a cup of tea in your room when you were up late studying." Said Hitty Dauphine.

"Wow! I don't know what to say...thank you! Thank you both! I felt sure that you would both be mad at me, but I do so have my heart set upon going to school to learn to be a teacher. It's just that, well, we already have a teacher here at Weathertop." Said Evalina obviously touched by their thoughtfulness and generosity.

"I even got you some snacks for the plane and a framed photo of myself so that you won't forget me." Said Dauphine handing her the sweets.

"I could never forget you, Dauphine, or all of the fun we have had together. Never. I will write to you often and let you know how things are going. Will you write to me?" Asked Evalina a little apprehensively.

"Of course. And perhaps it will not be too long before we see each other again. I hear that there are a few Hitty reunions in the works. I sure will miss you though, Evalina."

"I will miss you too."

I would be lying if I said that no tears were shed this day, because many were shed on both sides but I think each of the girls came to terms with the changes in store for them and found a way to be happy and hopeful for each other no matter where their adventures might lead them.

Evalina will be boarding the postal bus early next week to travel to her new home. Everyone here wishes her the best of luck and most exciting adventures.

Consulting Mrs. Witherwax...

The next afternoon Hitty Dauphine was looking for Evalina when she happened upon her in the living room. She was in the middle of having a private conference with Mrs. Witherwax. It looked serious.

She couldn't hear exactly what they were saying but Evalina looked so sad and Mrs. Witherwax seemed to be consoling her and giving her advice.

Hitty Dauphine didn't know what to think but she could feel a knot growing in the pit of her stomach.

Later that day, Mrs. Witherwax sat down with Dauphine and Hitty Too. She had a very somber look about her. She set a bracing cup of tea in front of each of them.

"Well girls, it seems that Hitty Evalina has been feeling very discontent for quite some time."

"What's wrong? She doesn't have to join Girl Scouts if she doesn't want to and I will be glad to share my best doll with her." Offered Hitty Dauphine.

"I don't think that is going to help this time Dauphine." Said Mrs. Witherwax gently. "It seems that she has her heart set on leaving Weathertop and going to school elsewhere. She has been looking at a school in Virginia. How would you feel if she were to go away to school Dauphine?"

It took Dauphine some time to answer. There was quite a big lump at the back of her throat. When she was able, she responded, "Well, I don't want her to go away of course, but I also want her to be happy and if going to school in Virginia will make her happy, I think we should let her go." She let out just a tiny sob...she sure hoped no one else could hear it.

"I know this is hard for you Dauphine. You wanted a sister and kindred spirit for so long; I know you waited and waited and so soon after she arrived, she wants to go away and leave you alone again, but I think you are making the right choice. I am sure there will be a new friend arriving in Weathertop soon enough. Perhaps she will be more happy here. If it helps, I think Hitty Evalina has agonized over this decision." Comforted Mrs. Witherwax putting a warm arm around Dauphine and giving her a little hug.

"I have an idea. Why don't you girls gather up some special supplies to send along with her to her new school. I am sure a little care package prepared by you will make her transition all the smoother and it will help you to feel excited about the changes she is anticipating."

"That is a good idea...we'll get to work right now." Hittys Dauphine and Too said in unison. Hitty Dauphine wiped the tears from her eyes and ventured a fragile smile.

"That's a girl." Mrs. Witherwax said patting her on the back.

After which the girls went off on a quest to collect things that Evalina would need for her new adventure.

Scouting...

Hitty Dauphine has been longing to be a girl scout for years. She has pined after the neat clean uniform and begged to be able to earn badges. 

Her dream has finally come true. They are opening a new chapter in our area and she was the first to sign up.

After much anticipation and a trip to the scouting store for uniforms, caps and handbooks, the day for the first meeting has finally arrived. The girls are getting ready in eager anticipation.

"Oh Hitty Too, let me help you adjust your beret." Hitty Dauphine offered.

"Thank you. I know it is important to get it at just the right angle."

"That's right." Agreed Dauphine.

At just that moment, Hitty Evalina let out a deep sigh.

"What's wrong Evalina? Why aren't you getting ready for girl scouts? Aren't you feeling any better?" Hitty Dauphine asked.

"I feel okay. I just don't want to be a girl scout." She replied sighing deeply again. "I'd rather just stay home; why don't you guys go without me."

"Well...okay..." Hittys Dauphine and Too said simultaneously.

As they were leaving, Evalina layed down on the bed and sighed again.

There is definitely something wrong with Evalina." Hitty Too whispered to Dauphine.

"I know. Who in their right mind wouldn't want to be a girl scout? I hope she snaps out of it soon."

Back to School Hitty Style...

 

The Weathertop Hittys are finally going back to school. The whole house is a-twitter with excitement. The girls are all dressed up in their new back to school dresses.

First the girls pack themselves some healthy lunches. The lunches at school are reputed to be able to stop a fly in its tracks, besides an apple a day keeps the doctor away. (Hey, maybe I need to try that...)

Next they organize their school supplies and pack them away in their backpacks. Buying and sorting school supplies has always been a favorite activity at Weathertop.

Time to go! The bus will be here soon!

"Hitty Evalina! You haven't even packed your lunch yet. You are going to be late for the bus!" Cried Hitty Dauphine.

"I don't feel well. I think I need to stay home." Evalina said sadly.

"Are you sure? If you want, I'll collect your work for you today." Offered Hitty Too.

"Thanks. But I don't think that will be necessary," said Evalina walking out of the kitchen slowly.

"What's up with her?" Dauphine asked looking after her with concern in her eyes.

"I don't know. Maybe she just needs a little space. Anyway, we need to get going." Hitty Too responded.

"You're right. Let's go. Mrs. Witherwax will sort her out."
