What is a bitty you might ask? And I think you'd be surprised by my answer...
It is a small Hitty, of course. This one is 4-1/2 inches tall.
When Judy was wee and we were expecting Punch, Mr. MacGyver made her a crib for her baby dolls. For several years, her dolls sat in that crib but it didn't get played with very much because she was far more active than imaginative, eventually the day came for us to get rid of the crib and/or salvage the wood. By that time, Mr. MacGyver had a brand new computerized mill and I was carving little wooden dolls and between the two of us, we put that wood to good purpose.
I carved a handful of Bittys from that wood, it being too small for full sized Hittys, maybe six or seven of them in all. Mr. MacGyver milled carving blanks for me from the wood we had and I carved them, several of them ended up with red Irish dancing curls (because that is what we were into at the time) and freckles (to remind me of the little red-headed, freckle faced donor of the wood). Each of these dolls was pretty special considering the collaboration involved and the source of the wood.
One of the dolls was given to Judy, who squealed with glee while clutching the new doll to her cheek, one was given to my mother, a couple were traded for dolls my friends had carved and two of them stayed with me at Weathertop.
Well, this week, I decided that it was time to wean down my collection of dolls to help contribute money to the bottomless pit I lovingly call "Doctor's Bills" and "Camera Fund," and one of the two little dolls I have made from this wood jumped up and volunteered to make her way to a new home. (Never fear, both Judy and I still have one a piece to keep).
And so, today, this little lady made her way onto Ebay...she is eager to travel and meet her new family
I named her Sadie, long ago, after one of my daughter's childhood friends, but have often thought she looked a little like Peppermint Patty.
She is wearing cute little hand-carved sandals that show off her pink painted toe-nails.
Sorry about these photos...I had to use my point and shoot, as my good camera is in the process of being replaced.
Anyway, if you are interested in checking out the auction. Here is a LINK to her page. Enjoy!
