Last night, a friend and I were sitting in a coffee shop reminiscing with our kids about the roller skating parties we used to attend when we were younger. Do you remember them? Skating around and around, trying to manage some feeble dance moves while keeping your body upright and rolling forward? Or maybe you were one of those accomplished skaters that would weave smoothly in and out of the crowd looking so cool and coordinated?
Do you remember the "couples skate" where you'd line up on the outside wall of the rink and wait anxiously for someone to ask you to skate? "Sad Eyes" or some other sappy song would be playing, the lights would be out and the disco ball throwing colored light specks around the rink, which made you feel slightly dizzy and disoriented, and if you were lucky enough to get to skate, not quite sure in which direction you should be going. If someone did ask you to skate, oh glory day, you'd skate holding hands, sweaty palms pressed together or with one of you skating backwards with the guys hands on your hips and your arms draped casually around his shoulders looking cool while your heart pounded out of your chest. Ah, good times! I remember them fondly. My daughter likes to go skating now, but not with the frequency that I did when I was her age. It was the "safe" dance (not to be confused with the "Safety Dance" which came later) and really good exercise, right?
Anyway, my tribute to Pink Saturday should help you dredge up some of your own happy, or not so happy adolescent memories. Remember Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker? Yay!
I still use it. Hee-hee! My daughter and I fight over whose is whose! They used to have far more flavors than they do now. Right? I remember desperately wanting the flavor Sugar Plum. I am sure it was disgusting, and to this day, I have no idea what sugar plum would smell or taste like, but the name sounded so fairy-like and exotic to me! I was sure that if I was wearing sugar plum lip gloss, my lips would just be so... well, you know what I mean.
I would love to hear your memories of Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker and/or rollerskating parties! Please leave me a comment and tell me all about them!
