Judy and I got matching rings.

They are really tiny...kind of tinier than I am used to, but fun!

She and I think we are the Wonder Twins from the 1970's Saturday morning cartoon classic, Super Friends. Check it out...

They were ridiculous, weren't they? Punch, Judy and I had a good laugh while I was trying to explain who they were. Now, Judy will "fist bump" my fist and cry, "Wonder Twin powers activate," and then we scramble to think of things into which we can transform.

We're silly that way.

Big News...

There is big news here in the MacGuyver household...news that I have been holding onto for about a month and a half now...news that I have been on pins and needles waiting to share with you.

My jewelry will now be exhibited and available for purchase at one of our local art galleries!

Desolation Road Studios, located on Main Street in Altamont, NY, is now open. It is housed in a cute little shop that was once the local apothocary. Much of the original woodwork and display shelving is still intact.

I have to admit...I had very little time to prepare for the opening and I worked my fingers raw bending, twisting, hammering and polishing jewelry to offer. I had to make many decisions about display and marketing as well as manufacture goods to display in my case. In the end, I decided to keep the display simple, using things I had around the house to create texture, height and interest. The display itself will be a work in progress that will develop as time and money allow.

I am very excited to see what this opportunity will bring.

The irony is that I had decided earlier this spring that I was no longer going to pursue selling my jewelry. I don't think I will ever stop making it because I enjoy it so much, but I have never been willing to attend the craft shows and fairs necessary to expand my business. Time with my family was something I was just not  willing to sacrifice. But this opportunity just dropped in my lap and was one I just could not pass up.

 

 

Desolation Road Studios is celebrating its grand opening this weekend. If you are in the area, please stop in and say hello.

Saturday at the studio, there will be acoustic performances, clay demonstrations and complimentary wine and beverages available from noon to 6pm.

In which I thank my muse -- Quest Day 5

I love jewelry. I love to buy it. I love to collect it. And I love to make it!

Recently, I was inspired with a new design. I am quite pleased with how it turned out.

 

It was inspired by Harry Potter. Stamped on each of the four hammered sterling silver bars are the words, "Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment and Tweak," one each.

They are the words Dumbledore spoke before the start of term banquet in book one and Harry remembers them in the final chapter at a very poignant moment.

I used a very heavy sterling silver wire for the bars and shaped and hammered them, giving them a delicate texture. Then I hand-stamped them with the words, oxidized the silver and added pretty little sparkly silver beads that slide back and forth on the bars. The bars were then attached to a heavy sterling chain that has also been oxidized. The whole thing measures about 16 inches in length meaning that it rests right on your collar bone at the base of your neck. The whole necklace has a very tantalizing texture.

Finally for just a little extra sparkle, I added a little silver lily drop combined with a blue-green flower bead.

I love how it turned out and am thankful for these inspirations when they strike. I haven't made any new jewelry since the summer and this was so much fun! I wish I could afford to make jewelry all the time!

• I made three such necklaces. One like the necklace above for myself, one to pop into my Etsy shop and an ever so much more delicate, non-oxidized version to sell.

On the delicate version, I used a smaller gauge sterling wire to create the bars and strung them together with a wire-wrapped, amethyst-colored cut glass bead.

 

The chain at the back is very delicate as well, making this a very light necklace that will sit like a collar on your collar bones at the base of your neck.

This ring...

It is really a trio of stacking rings each with its own little blossom. I chose custom stones. The stones include adventurine, peridot and pink tourmaline.

What I love?

I can wear them together or each on its own.

It suits every mood.

These were made by the lovely Kira. You can find her wonderful designs in her Etsy shop. I have two of her designs and I absolutely LOVE them!

Now of course I have stacked them with rings from two other Etsy artists. I love to create texture in my jewelry choices. One of the artists is BDDesigns and the other ChrisParry.
